He is standing in the third row and the words are on the screen and he cannot get any of them out.
Everybody around him is fine. That is not a complaint, they are lovely, they mean it, the woman in front has her hand up and she has had a hard year herself and good for her. The song is the one about goodness following him all his days. He knows it. He has sung it in this room for eleven years.
His mouth will not go.
He tried the first line and heard himself and stopped, because it came out as a noise a person makes rather than a sentence a person believes, and he would rather stand in silence than do that.
Five months ago he posted the keys through the door of the office on a Thursday afternoon. Two sets, one with a bottle opener on the ring that his daughter bought him at a garden center. He heard them land on the mat on the other side. That is the sound he gets in the night, not the letters, not the phone calls, just that.
They are in a rented room and a half now, the four of them. The curtains are somebody else's and they do not meet in the middle. His son sleeps in what the advert called a study. His wife is being magnificent about it in a way that is worse than if she complained.
And he rehearses the month. Every night, at about two, he goes back through the month he should have moved and he lays it out and he walks round it. He knows every turning in it. He could draw you a map.
So he stands in the third row on a Sunday morning holding a phone he does not need to look at, next to a chair he could sit down on, while a room full of people who love him sing that goodness has followed him all his days.
He wants to mean it. That is the thing he cannot make anybody understand, including himself. It is not that he has stopped believing God. It is that everything with a tune on it seems to need him to sound all right first, and he is not, and he will not pretend in a church.
Maybe that is where you are. Standing up because sitting down would be a statement, with your mouth shut and a screen full of words in front of you that you cannot make honest.

The word first, because it is the reason people come here
There is a word across the top of this site and I would rather deal with it than let it hum away underneath everything else.
Abundance is not the keys back. It is not a front door with your name behind it again and it is not the rented room turning into something you own. And it is not money, which is the reading the name draws, and I am not going to hint otherwise for a single paragraph. Abundance is fullness of life, in the plain sense the Shepherd meant when He said He came so that His own would have life and have it to the full.
You have that fullness standing in the third row with your mouth shut. It is written in John 10 and not in anything I have decided about you, and the Holy Spirit carries a sentence like that into a man who cannot sing.
Everything after this is under that meaning and never any other.
The garment is given, never demanded
Isaiah says God gives a garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Read the verb. Gives.
A garment is put on a person. It is not generated by a person and then presented upward as evidence. Somewhere along the way praise got turned into a performance with a threshold, and now people stand in rooms measuring whether their face is doing the right thing, and the heavy ones conclude they have failed at something.
You have not failed at anything this morning. Heaviness is named in Isaiah 61 as a condition God clothes rather than a condition God is annoyed by, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the clothing, and He is not waiting for a better performance out of the third row before He starts.
What He actually receives
Now the verse this whole page stands on.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.Psalm 51:17
Look at what is on the altar. Not a strong voice. Not a good week. Not a man who has got over it. A broken spirit, and God says plainly that He will not despise it.
That is the whole transaction and there is nothing else in it. He is not receiving your praise on condition it sounds convincing. He is not weighing whether enough has been processed to allow a person to speak. There is no minimum length.
So this is what I would say to you in the third row, and I would say it quietly with the singing still going on around us. Give Him four words. Give Him the true bit and nothing else. Not the line on the screen, the line under it.
You are received exactly as you are standing, unmusical, unresolved, halfway through the worst year of your life. Psalm 51 says He does not despise the broken thing brought to Him, and His Spirit is the one who carries a short honest sentence up as worship when a whole song could not get out.
About the month you keep going back through
One more thing, and then I will leave it alone.
I am not going to walk through the month with you. I will not list it out and I will not tell you it was not yours either. Both of those are audits, and God has never yet run mercy through an audit in one direction or the other.
What I will say is that the two o'clock version of you, laying out the map of the month again, is not standing outside the mercy while he does it. There is no waiting room. Psalm 51 was written by a man with rather a lot to go back through, and he brought a broken spirit, not a defense.
You have been met in the middle of the rehearsal, at two in the morning, mid sentence. That is written and it is not sentiment, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps arriving in the exact hour a man is least able to sound like a believer.
Something can be given from here, standing in the third row with the song still going.
You are able to worship without pretending, and that is not a lowered standard, it is the actual standard. Psalm 51 puts a broken spirit on the altar and says God does not despise it, and the Holy Spirit carries a four word sentence the whole distance when a whole song could not get out of a man's mouth.
Nothing here needs a feeling first. The garment is given, not earned, and heavy is allowed in this room. So open your mouth on the true part. God's people have always come back to their feet by saying a short true thing out loud, and He has never once sent one back for being too small.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing where you are. You have the standing to say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and losing a house does not alter where a person is seated. What happens with the months ahead is His to decide, and whatever He does with any of it, these three are true this morning. They rest on what is written in Psalm 51 rather than on anything I could talk you into, and His Spirit is the one who carries them out of a shut mouth.
- Front door I handed the keys to, you are shut to me and you are not the verdict on my life. Scripture puts a broken spirit on the altar and says God does not despise it, and no letterbox has ever had a vote on that. What I bring Him this morning is short and it is true, and He takes it.
- Verdict that I ruined my own family, you are dismissed and you do not get my Sunday mornings any longer. In the name of Jesus I stand on Psalm 51, where God receives a broken and contrite heart and asks for no account of how the heart got broken, and His Spirit lifts it as worship. Heavy is allowed here, and I am praising Him with my actual voice.
- Father, You do not despise what is broken and You said so plainly in the psalm, and You are not waiting for me to sound better than I do. You are here in the third row where nothing honest would come out, and You have not moved off. Take the true sentence I have got, and I am saying it out loud now.
