Thursday, half past seven, the small hall behind the main one, and there are five of them in a circle of plastic chairs with the heater making the noise it makes.
Ines has the click in one ear and the words on a music stand she does not need, because she has sung this one about two hundred times. Second verse. Her entry is on the third beat and she takes it exactly where it lives, dead center of the note, breath in the right place, the little lift on the fourth line that she works out once and then owns forever.
And it is a lie.
Not the song. The song is fine, somebody wrote it in a good year and meant every word. What is a lie is her, delivering a line about God being enough, in tune, at seven thirty on a Thursday, six weeks after everything she had built came apart in a way she is still finding out about in installments.
Nobody in the room notices. That is the thing. The note is right. The blend is right. The drummer nods at her because it sounded good, and she nods back, and something in her goes further away.
So she stops. Not dramatically. She just quietly stops opening her mouth to God on her own, in the car, in the kitchen, at the sink, because she will not stand there and say bright things she does not mean to the only person she has left who already knows.
That is where you are, and I want to say straight out that it is not a failure of faith. It is honesty with nowhere to go.

Two things named before anything is offered
First, the word on the front of this page, because you may have arrived hoping it meant something it does not mean.
Abundance here is not money and it is not a replacement for what burned. It is the thing Jesus said about Himself in one line: I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. Fullness of life. Presence, company, a self that is alive in the ruins rather than a set of new possessions arriving to cover them. If you came for a promise about your circumstances you are going to leave without one, and I would rather disappoint you in the first minute than in the last.
Second, the ashes. Six weeks in, the smell of it is still in everything, and the people who love you keep reaching for the future tense, and correcting them stopped being worth the energy weeks ago. Some of this you had a hand in and some of it you did not, and nothing here is going to itemize which is which.
And here is what is already true of you before a single note of anything is offered. You are received exactly as you arrive tonight. Scripture says God will not despise a broken and a contrite heart, which means the state you are in is not a disqualification from being heard, and the Holy Spirit is the One carrying whatever you manage to say. He has never needed it to be tuneful.
That is the ground we are standing on. Now the actual subject.
The offering asked for is truth, not brightness
Here is what David does with a heart that has nothing tidy in it.
Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.Psalm 62:8
Pour out. Not present. Not arrange. Pour out is what you do with a bucket, and the whole point of a bucket is that whatever was in it comes out in the order it was in.
Read the psalms with that in your hand and you find they are full of complaint, and the complaint is not the failed part of the psalm. It is addressed to God, out loud, on purpose, and that is precisely what makes it worship rather than muttering. The direction is the offering.
So take this over you now, because it changes what you are allowed to bring. You are welcome to come to God heavy, and heavy is not a disqualification, and it is not a lesser grade of prayer. Psalm 62:8 tells a whole nation to pour the heart out at all times rather than to tidy it first, and the Holy Spirit is the One carrying whatever comes out of you, in whatever order it comes.
And notice that the reason attached to it is not "because you will feel better". It is because God is a refuge. That is a statement about Him. It is true on Thursday at half past seven whether or not one thing in you agrees with it.
The garment is given, and gifts are not uniforms
Now to the verse this whole site is built on, and to a word in it that gets read past.
To give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit.Isaiah 61:3
To give them.
That is a gift being handed to somebody who is sitting in ashes, by somebody who came down to where they were sitting. It is not a uniform issued at the door with a note saying wear this or do not come in. Nobody in that verse is being told off for the faint spirit. The faint spirit is the reason the gift is being brought.
You have that garment coming toward you as a gift rather than as a demand, and the heaviness in your chest tonight is the reason it is on its way and never the thing disqualifying you from it. Isaiah 61:3 puts the giving in God's hands from start to finish, and the Holy Spirit does the actual dressing, at His pace, in His way, while you sit exactly where you are.
Which means you can stop trying to produce it. Praise that has to be manufactured before God will receive it is not praise, it is entry payment, and He never set one.
Four words is a whole offering
So what do you actually say, when the honest inventory is short?
You say the short true thing. "God, You are here." "You have not left." "You are God." Four words, five words, whatever survives the honesty test, said out loud in a car with the engine off.
Not because short is humble. Because short is true, and true is the only material this is built out of. You have permission for the four words, and the word never once set a minimum length on an offering, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries four as far as forty.
So here is the turn, and it asks you for nothing you do not have.
You did not lose your worship. You lost your willingness to lie in it, and that is not the same loss, and honestly it is the more valuable half of the two. Something in you refused to say a bright sentence to God that was not true, and that refusal is closer to reverence than to rebellion.
You are able to worship tonight without pretending one thing is fine, because what He asked for was your heart poured out rather than your heart presented. Psalm 62:8 is where that stands, and His Spirit is the one who has kept you honest enough to go quiet rather than fake it.
Now open your mouth on the short true thing. That is the tile. Nothing else has to be laid tonight.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at whatever volume you have got. The right to speak them was given to you in Christ rather than issued on the strength of how you are doing, and Psalm 62:8 is the ground under them rather than any brightness you can manage tonight. However He answers, and whenever, the lines stay true: they are His word, the Holy Spirit is what makes them living, and nothing here asks you to feel anything.
- Bright voice I put on for a Thursday, you are off duty and I do not need you tonight. Scripture says to pour the heart out before Him rather than to tidy it up on the way in, so there is nothing left for you to hold together in this room. I am telling Him the true thing instead, at whatever length it comes out.
- Idea that heavy means unbelief, you have had my mouth shut in my own kitchen for six weeks. In the name of Jesus you do not get to grade my worship by its temperature. The word puts the garment of praise in God's own hands as a thing He gives to mourners, and He has never once brought it to somebody who was already fine.
- God, You are here, and that is the whole sentence and every word of it is true. Your word says to pour out my heart before You because You are a refuge, and Your Spirit is the One carrying four words as far as forty. So here are mine, out loud, and I am not adding one thing I do not mean.
Psalm 62:8
