She drives two towns over to do the shop now. It adds forty minutes. She has stopped pretending to herself that it is about the parking.
It is four o'clock on a Thursday and she is in the car with the boot open and a trolley half unloaded, and she has stopped, because a woman three spaces down looks like somebody and it took her a second to be sure it was not.
That is the thing that has changed in five weeks. Every car park is now a room where somebody might be.
The phone is face down on the passenger seat. It has been face down since about the second week. It does not ring, which is the point, and the face down part is so that she does not keep checking whether it has. There were forty odd people in her contacts who would have rung about nothing on a Thursday. Now there are three, and two of those are family, and one of them rings out of duty and she can hear it.
She knows exactly what people know. In a place this size everybody has the same version by the Sunday.
Five weeks. The immediate part is over. The meetings happened. The thing was said in the places it was going to be said. Nothing is on fire any more, and that is somehow worse, because what is left is a Thursday afternoon and a trolley and a life that has gone quiet all the way through.
In the fruit aisle earlier a man she has known for years came round the end, saw her, and turned his trolley. Not cruelly. He just could not do the conversation, and she understood it completely, and she stood there holding a bag of apples for longer than a person needs to.
Here is what she cannot do at all. She cannot picture next year. She has tried, the way you press a bruise. She tries to see a Thursday in twelve months and there is nothing there. Not a bad picture. No picture. A gray where the picture goes.
Somebody sent her a card with a verse on it about plans and a future and a hope, and she has put it in a drawer, because she believes it and she cannot make it produce an image, and being unable to see anything at all feels like a failure she has to keep private.
Maybe that is where you are. Sitting somewhere ordinary with the boot open, five weeks in, and nothing at all where next year should be.

What the word means, said before anything is offered under it
The word on the front of this site is going to get used in a minute, so let me be exact about it now.
Abundance is not your name back. It is not the phone starting again, not the trade taking you on, not a version of the town where nobody heard. And it is not money, which is what the word sounds like and what a fair few people mean by it. Abundance is fullness of life, which is the plain sense of the one sentence it comes out of.
You have that now, five weeks in, in a car park two towns over with a trolley half unloaded. It is written in John 10 in the Shepherd's own words rather than in anything I have decided about you, and the Holy Spirit carries a sentence like that into a woman who cannot picture Thursday.
That is the meaning, and it does not quietly widen further down the page.
Nobody here is going to describe your future to you
I want to say clearly what this page will not do, because five weeks of people doing it is plenty.
I am not going to describe next year. I am not going to tell you what will have happened by the spring, or who will have come round, or what the town will be saying, or what you will be doing for work. I do not know, I have not been told, and a page that pretends otherwise is selling you a picture and calling it faith.
And I am not going to ask you to generate hope as a feeling. Some readers arriving on this page have none available today and that is not a fault in them. Nothing here requires you to feel anything before it is true.
Here is the verse, and notice what it refuses to do.
What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him.1 Corinthians 2:9
The sentence says prepared. Then it stops. It does not describe the thing, it says specifically that no eye has seen it and no heart has imagined it, which means the inability to picture it is not a symptom of your collapse. It is the ordinary condition of everybody.
You are not failing at anything by seeing gray where the picture goes. Scripture says the thing was never available to the imagination in the first place, and it is the Holy Spirit who holds a person steady in the not seeing instead of demanding a vision from them.
Kept is a different thing from shown
There is a difference between something being kept for you and something being shown to you, and almost all the pain of a Thursday like this one sits in the gap.
A thing kept is safe whether or not you can see it. A thing kept does not require your attention to stay in existence. The verse does not put the future in your hands, which is the mercy in it, because your hands five weeks after this are not the place for it. It puts it in His hands, prepared, before any of this happened and not adjusted by any of it.
You have been kept, and that is what is finished, and it is not the same as a description. First Corinthians 2 says God prepared, and His Spirit is the one who searches the deep things of God and carries the certainty of it into somebody with no image at all.
Notice what has not been claimed there. Not what next year holds. Not whether the phone rings. What is settled is that He has prepared, and that this reader belongs to Him, and neither of those is up for review in a car park.
Tomorrow is a legitimate answer
So what does a person do with a year they cannot see.
They do tomorrow. That is not a small consolation, it is the actual instruction. Manna was daily and it was daily on purpose, and the people gathering it were not given a picture of the whole journey either.
You have been given tomorrow. Not the year, and you were never asked to carry the year. Scripture gives bread for a day at a time, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a single ordinary day enough to stand on when the rest of it is gray.
If nothing is the honest answer for tomorrow, then nothing is the honest answer, and it is allowed. But if there is one small thing, put your hand on that one and let the rest of the year alone.
Something can be received in a car park two towns over, five weeks in, with no picture of anything at all.
You are kept. Not shown, not promised a description, kept, and that is what First Corinthians 2 actually says when it tells us God has prepared what no eye has seen, and the Holy Spirit carries that certainty into a person who has none of her own.
Nothing is being asked of you here and no vision is required. So say the small thing out loud. A thing said with the mouth stops being a mood and becomes ground under a person's feet, and God's people have always come back to their feet by naming what is actually in front of them for the next day.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, sitting where you are with the boot still open. You have the standing to say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and what a town decides does not alter where a person is seated. What next year holds is not mine to say and the outcome is His, and however He answers over any of it, these three are true this afternoon. They rest on what is written in First Corinthians 2 rather than on anything I could talk you into, and His Spirit is the one who carries them into a car with a quiet phone in it.
- Phone lying face down on the seat, you are quiet and you are not the register of who I am. Scripture says God has prepared what no eye has seen, and a town's version of me was never consulted about any of it. In the name of Jesus I stop reading the silence as a verdict and I hold what He has kept.
- Idea that I am only the story now, you are dismissed and you do not get another Thursday out of me. God prepared what no heart has imagined, which is written in First Corinthians 2, and His Spirit knows it while I cannot picture a thing. I am His this afternoon, and being unable to see the year does not move that an inch.
- God, You have prepared what no eye has seen and You are not asking me to picture it today. You are holding next year and You are holding me, and neither of those depends on what a car park thinks. Keep it, and I am doing the one small ordinary thing I named for tomorrow.
