The keyring is flat on the rubber mat at the key cutting counter and the man is holding it up to the light, looking for the number stamped on the shoulder.
Her daughter lost hers. That is the only reason she is here on a Tuesday afternoon with her coat still on.
There are four keys on the ring. The flat one for the rented place. The little one for the meter cupboard. Her mother's back door. And the brass one, worn pale, that opens the front door of a house on Halton Road which has somebody else's shoes in the hall now.
She has never taken it off.
The man turns the ring over and finds it and says, kindly, because he is being nothing but kind: this one's not doing anything, love. Want me to take it off, save you the weight?
She says no. A bit too fast, and then again more gently so that he knows she is not cross with him, and he shrugs and gets on with the cutting, and the machine screams for eleven seconds.
Two years next month since the letter, the meeting, and the day the keys went across a desk in an envelope with a compliment slip in it.
And the strange part nobody warns you about is how quiet two years is. The first fortnight there were people in the house every day. Her sister rang every morning for a month. All of that stopped, properly and completely, and it stopped so long ago that she cannot even be annoyed about it.
What is left is a box in the hall of a rented upstairs flat with HALL on the side in marker pen, taped shut for two years because there is nowhere here to put what is in it. And the curtains, which fit no window in this place and which she cannot take to the tip.
And a month she goes back to. She can walk through that month like a room. She has rehearsed it in the car, at the sink, at ten to four in the morning, and it does not come out any differently on the four hundredth run.
Maybe that is where you are. Maybe somebody handed you a bright verse about beauty for ashes and you could not get it to reach the floor you are standing on. And maybe you came to a page with the word abundance on the front because some part of you hoped it meant money, and I am not going to make you feel small for that. Nobody who has lost a house hopes for the sophisticated thing first.

The word, and what it does not mean
Abundance is not money. Not on this page, not in the verse the word comes from, and not in the sentence somebody quoted at you in a car park. It is not the front door on Halton Road with your name back on the paperwork. I am not going to hint at it, and I am not going to leave the word pleasantly vague so that it does quiet work on you while you read.
Here is the sentence the word actually lives in. Jesus said, I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. John 10 verse 10. Read what the noun is. Life. Abundantly is not a second parcel with things inside it; it is a description of how much life. Fullness, over the brim rather than measured out with a small cup, and never fitted to what a person managed to keep.
So hear it as it stands. You have fullness of life, and I am not saying that because it is the encouraging thing to say to a woman with a taped box in her hall. It is written down in John 10, spoken by the Shepherd Himself, and it was never made conditional on an address. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries a sentence like that into a two year old wound, because a definition on its own has never once got that far in.
You were inside the reach of that sentence on the afternoon the keys went across the desk, and nothing in that room moved you out of it. Scripture puts the giving in the hands of a Shepherd who goes to where the sheep actually is, and His Spirit does not wait at the edge of a rented flat for the ground to be tidier before He fills the person on it.
Two years is a long time to be quiet
Nothing I have said fills that box in the hall or hands back the four years of school runs out of a front door on Halton Road. A page that hurries past this has not understood what two years is. Two years is when nobody asks, and when the story has been told so often that it has gone smooth, and when a school gate means listening to somebody complain about their kitchen. And no, I am not going to tell you that losing it was secretly right, or that somebody upstairs arranged it, or that in a few years you would thank anybody for it. Those are the comfortable sentences, they are lies, and I will not put one in your hands while your coat is still on.
What is true instead is this. You have been kept. Not the house, and I am not going to blur those two things to make a paragraph work, because the house went. You have been kept, and that is what the word of God says over a person rather than what I decided about you, and the Holy Spirit holds it steady in you on the mornings when the month plays again at ten to four.
Fullness is not the opposite of loss, and that is the thing this site exists to say. A person can be full and bereaved in the same afternoon. The two are not in a queue where one has to finish before the other is allowed to begin.
So here is what has already been settled about you, and it does not wait on an address. You are loved while producing nothing. Most of us have never once experienced that, and it is written all over the Gospels in the way Jesus dealt with people who had nothing at all to show Him. The Spirit is the one who makes it land as fact rather than as a nice idea about God.
What fullness looks like in a rented upstairs flat
So what does it actually look like, if it is not the front door and not the money. It looks unspectacular, which is exactly why people walk past it. It is the return of ordinary tenderness. It is the afternoon somebody notices they laughed at something on the radio. It is prayer that has stopped being a negotiation. It is sleeping. It is the small astonishing return of wanting anything at all.
And none of that is a consolation prize handed over because the real thing was unavailable. Life, and more of it, was the headline from the start. You have the life. The house was scaffolding around a life, and the scaffolding came down in an envelope, and the merciful and appalling truth is that the life is still standing underneath and God is filling it. That is John 10 and not my optimism, and the Holy Spirit is doing the filling while you read this.
Something can be received here, at a counter, in a coat, before one thing about the situation is different.
You have been given fullness of life in the exact place where you are standing, and it is John 10 that says so rather than me, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it in rather than your ability to feel it this afternoon. Nothing is being asked of you first. There is no version of this where a person has to be further along, or calmer, before it applies to them.
So say it with your mouth. Out loud, in whatever room you are in. A thing said out loud stops being a suggestion somebody made and becomes ground under the feet, and the people of God have always found their footing by opening their mouths on what He had already said.
Declare this over yourself
Say these with your mouth. You have the standing to say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and no letter and no envelope has ever altered where a person is seated. What happens to Halton Road, to the box in the hall and to the months ahead is His to decide, and however He answers over any of it, these three lines are true tonight. They rest on what is written in John 10 rather than on anything I could talk you into, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries them past two years of quiet.
- Brass key on my ring, you are a door in somebody else’s hall and you are not the size of my life, and I am not going to read you as the verdict on it. Jesus said He came so that His own would have life and have it to the full, and that sentence never once mentioned an address. In the name of Jesus I take my hands off what went, and I hold what He is actually giving.
- Voice that says I am the one who lost it, you do not get the first word in my mornings, and you have no claim on ten to four in the morning any longer. The Shepherd goes to where the sheep actually is, and He has never once required the ground to be tidy before arriving on it. I am loved while producing nothing, and I am standing on that this afternoon.
- Shepherd, You came so that I could have life and have it over the brim, and You said it in John 10 and attached no address to it. You know the brass key, You know ten to four in the morning, and You have not moved on the way everybody else has. Fill the life I have actually got by Your Spirit, here in this flat, and my hands are open for it tonight.
