Oil Of JoyJames 1:17

The Key Came Back Through The Door

This message is for to receive gladness as something poured rather than produced, three weeks after the marriage ended, standing in the hall on a Tuesday afternoon holding the spare key she posted back in a padded envelope

The envelope came at about eleven and he found it at two, because he had not been down the hall.

Padded. Small. His name on the front in her handwriting, which is the thing that does it, not the key. She has written his name several thousand times on birthday cards and lists and the back of photographs, and this is the same hand, in biro, careful, on a Jiffy bag.

He gets it open standing up. The key comes out into his palm with gray fluff on it from the lining. It is the spare, the one with the paint on it from the hall radiator, and there is no note, and he puts it on the shelf by the phone charger, which is a stupid place for it, and does not move it.

Three weeks. Everybody is still being very good. There are messages he has not answered. His mother rings every day at six. Somebody left a lasagne on the step on Sunday and he has eaten some of it standing up, out of the dish.

The house is loud. That is what nobody tells you about a house with one person in it: it is not silent, it is loud, because every sound is the only sound and there is nothing to put over the top of it. The boiler. The fridge. A car outside. He has stopped putting the radio on in the kitchen, because the radio was hers, not the object, the habit.

The photographs are still in the hall. Both of them outside the registry office in the rain with somebody's umbrella coming into the top of the frame. Her mother laughing. Taking them down is its own afternoon and he has not had that afternoon yet, so he walks past them four or five times a day with his eyes doing a small movement he was not aware of until last week.

His brother came round and was kind and said, you will laugh again, mate. Give it a year.

And he said yeah. And he meant no. Because sitting on the third stair after his brother left, with a spare key on a shelf by a phone charger, what he thinks is not I am sad. What he thinks is: that is finished. Whatever that was, feeling good, I am not going to be one of the people who does that any more.

Maybe that is where you are. Maybe somebody has promised you a feeling and the promise landed like a bill.

The Key Came Back Through The Door

Joy is poured, never produced

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.James 1:17

Read the direction of travel. Down. From above, from the Father of lights, and the sentence tells you two things about the giver and nothing about the recipient's technique. Nobody in that verse is generating anything. It comes down, and the only thing a person does with something coming down is be underneath it.

So you are not being asked to produce gladness and you never were. The written word calls it a gift that comes down, which means it is not a mood you are behind on and not a project you are failing, and it is the Holy Spirit who brings it rather than the one waiting to see whether you managed it.

And Isaiah calls it oil. The oil of joy for mourning, poured onto a person by somebody else's hand. You cannot self-anoint in that image. It was never available as a technique.

What I am not going to promise you

I am not going to tell you when it comes. Not at the year mark, not at the first spring, not once the first of everything is behind you. I do not know, nobody knows, and the person who puts a date on it has handed you a deadline dressed as comfort.

And I am not going to tell you the marriage ending was for something. Not that heaven arranged it. Not that a design underneath it will make sense from a distance. Not that gratitude is waiting up ahead. Those are the sentences handed to people three weeks in, every one is a lie, and a lie offered gently still breaks a person's trust by week six.

What I will say is that you are not disqualified from gladness by how long this has taken or by how completely you have stopped expecting it. Isaiah 61 puts the oil of joy on mourners, which is the whole point of the verse rather than a footnote in it, and His Spirit is the one doing the pouring while a man sits on a stair and believes none of it.

What is on offer on a Tuesday

So what is actually here, if it is not the marriage and not a promise about February.

It is fullness of life, said plainly rather than left shining and vague. It is the return of ordinary feeling. It is prayer that is not a report. It is being with people again and wanting to. It is the radio going back on in the kitchen because somebody wanted noise, not as an act of bravery. It is sleeping. It is the small astonishing return of wanting anything at all.

And you are inside all of that right now, with the key on the shelf and the photographs still up in the hall. Not once you have taken them down. Now, walking past them with your eyes doing the small movement, and that is not my encouragement, it is what the Shepherd said He came for in John 10, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it into a house that is too loud.

The house has one person in it, and God is in it too, and neither of those cancels the other.

You were loved through all three of these weeks. On the day the envelope came, on the stair after your brother left, on the night you ate lasagne standing up out of the dish. That is not a nice thought I am offering, it is what is written about how God stays near the broken hearted, and His Spirit did not leave the hall when you did.

The breakthrough

Something can be received right here, on a stair, three weeks in, with the photographs still up and the key on a shelf by a phone charger.

You are not shut out of gladness and you have not been struck off the list of people it happens to. James 1 says every good gift comes down from the Father of lights and names no condition in the person underneath, and His Spirit is the one who pours rather than the one waiting to see whether you can lift yourself. There is no version of this where the oil goes on only after you have managed to want it.

So open your hands. Not as a gesture and not as a technique. Hands that are open are hands that are not holding anything up.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with your mouth. You have the standing because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and three weeks in a loud house has not moved where a person is seated. When gladness comes, and whether you feel it at all this year, is His to decide, and however He answers, these three are true tonight. They rest on James 1 and Isaiah 61 rather than on anything I could talk you into, and the Holy Spirit carries them onto a third stair.

  1. Spare key on the shelf by the charger, you are a door I no longer open and you are not a verdict on my life. Scripture says every good gift comes down from the Father of lights, and it named no condition in the man standing underneath. In the name of Jesus I take my hands off what has gone and I hold what He is pouring.
  2. Sentence I passed on myself on the stair, you are not true and you do not get the last word in this hall. The oil of joy in Isaiah 61 is poured on mourners and not on the ones who managed to cheer up first. Gladness is His to give and I am not the one manufacturing it.
  3. Lord, You are the Father of lights and every good gift comes down from You, and there is no shadow of turning in You at all. You know the envelope and You know the photographs in the hall, and Your Spirit has been in this house every hour of these three weeks. Pour what You pour, in Your own time, and my hands are open while the song plays.
